Things to do on Valentine's Day

This Valentine's Day take the opportunity to get some QT with your sweetie. Whether you're celebrating your first or 51st Valentine's Day with your special someone here are 14 fantastic fun and free things to on Valentine's Day.

1.   Get nostalgic – take them to a place of significance.

Where was your first kiss? Or your first date? Spend the day bringing back old memories – and making new ones.

2.   Turn off the devices and chat the old fashioned way.

It’s time to ditch the iPhones, iPads, androids and any other techy gadgets you have lying around home. Disconnect from the virtual world for one day and re-connect with your loved one.

3.   Pop a love letter in their lunch, purse or work bag.

We’re not talking along the lines of ‘roses are red, violets are blue’... Just something meaningful, sweet or funny that your special someone will appreciate.

4.   Make a playlist of your partner’s favourite songs.

Gone are the days of the mix tape - waiting eagerly by the radio, finger poised on the record button, ready for your favourite song to come on. Jump onto Spotify to create a playlist of songs especially for your significant other.

5.   Take a bath together.

Grab some aromatherapy candles and fancy bubble bath, dim the lights and unwind with your loved one.

6.   Watch the sunrise or sunset.

There’s something magical about seeing in a new day, and who better to share it with than the one you love. Plus, the early start is a good excuse to crawl back into bed afterwards and spend a lazy morning in bed together.

If getting up before the break of dawn really isn’t your thing, opt for watching the sunset instead. It’s just as beautiful, with the added bonus of being at an acceptable hour to pop open that bottle of bubbles you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

7.   Post them a handwritten love letter via snail mail.

The old-fashioned way - pen to paper, sealed with a kiss and popped in the post box with a 50c stamp. Just make sure you allow enough time for the postman to deliver!

8.   Handpick some flowers.

It really is the thought that counts, so make your handpicked blooms extra special by attaching a love note to each stem.

9.   Go for a walk together.

New Zealand boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the world so get off the beaten track this Valentine’s Day and explore some new trails or walks around your area. Make a day of it and pack a picnic lunch with all your partner’s favourite goodies.

10.   Declare your love and appreciation on Facebook.

If public displays of affection are what makes your other half swoon, take to the keyboard to let Facebook world know how lucky you are to have them in your life.

11.   Make breakfast in bed.

Put a smile on your partner’s face before their feet even hit the ground. We love these mouth-watering recipes by Jamie Oliver.

12.   Dance to ‘your’ song.

It might be your wedding song, the song you shared your first kiss to, or just the song you both love singing from start to finish without missing a word. Whichever it is, press play and take to the dance (or living room!) floor.

13.   Give a back or foot massage – relieve some stress!

Forget those half-hearted shoulder rubs in front of the TV. Put on some relaxing music and mood lighting and put your fingers to work. Your Valentine will love you for it, and they’ll probably return the favour!

14.   Create a romantic dinner at home together.

Re-create a meal from a shared favourite restaurant, or try a completely new recipe altogether. Get creative – the harder the recipe, the bigger the sense of accomplishment (and appetite) when you finish it together.
